Free Pattern Friday: Chubby Parakeet Amigurumi

birdAllWooo! Welcome to Free Pattern Friday! This week’s pattern is a 4″ tall chubby little parakeet/ budgie/ bird thing. Also there’s a funky new banner that I totally spent hours on and didn’t just use a generic “happy birthday” template. I’m pretending the streamers are actually strands of yarn.

This was one of the very few times that I’ve used fabric paint in my amigurumi. I thought the face looked a little plain so I added blush marks for the hell of it. I will note that the wings may be a bit tricky so I’ll explain it more in that section.

Also you will need to do some puff stitches so here’s how I did them:
[Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull up a loop] 3 times,
Yarn over, pull through all the loops on the hook

Here’s a more detailed explanation on rounds 4 and 5:
Round 4: You’re going to start by chaining 4 and then single crocheting down the chains (so 3 total sc). Now you’re going to start in the next stitch (what would have been the first st of the round if you didn’t chain) a pattern of 2 single crochets and then an increase until you reach the end of the round.
Round 5: You’re going to single crochet up the chains on the opposite side. So you should single crochet 3 times and then reach the top of the chains. Now work your way back down the other side, again with 3 single crochets. In the next stitch start working the 3 sc, inc, and so on. Note that you will go slightly beyond the end of the round and therefore up the chains again. The final puff stitch should be at the top of the chains, right before going back down the other side.

Assembly

▪ Sew the beak between the eyes, stuffing as you go
▪ Use red yarn to embroider a mouth onto the beak
▪ Use light pink yarn to embroider nostrils onto the top of the beak
▪ Use orange yarn to embroider 3 lines next to each eye
▪ Sew the wings on either side of the body
▪ Sew the feet onto the bottom of the body
▪ Use pink fabric paint to paint on blush marks

Leave a comment if you have any questions and I’ll try to get back to you. TGIF and happy crocheting!
